Handycam will not accept cassette

The cassette compartment will close when there is NO cassette in it. It will not close when any cassette is inserted. In the compartment is a small plastic post that enters a hole in the cassette. The post has an Led or sensor on it. If I slip a PVC sleeve over it the fault is replicated, ie the compartment will not shut even without the cassette. Please help!
