Hooking up ViewSonic HDTV with personal DVR and VCR

Missy Posted Oct 28, 2008

How do I hook up my machines?

I have NO IDEA what I am doing and the manuals aren't helping. I am trying to hook up my personal Phillips DVR with my new ViewSonice HDTV and my VCR. What cables go where? One thing I read said to hook antennae cable from wall to VCR, then from VCR to TV and use red, yellow, white cables from DVR to TV. So the DVR doesn't have an antennae cable hooked up? There is "no signal" on the TV and I have tried all sorts of combinations... obviously not the correct one, though! HELP

With this combination of equipment certain compromises will have to be made as far as convenience of operation is concerned, and so I suggest the following. As you seem to have the VCR already connected into the DVR I would then use a set of "component" video leads between the DVR and the TV, and of course with this type of connection you will also have to use an audio lead as well, as component leads are only video and do not transfer any audio. Make sure you set the TV's external input selection to component. Connecting this way will give maximum quality from you present equipment.

JB - thank you. It is a Phillips DVR, model HPRW 720/17 and a ViewSonic N2230W HDTV. I think I figured out the antennae stuff. Since I am not going to use the VCR to record, only play, then I don't need that in the antennae loop. The back of the DVR has OUT2, OUT1, IN (which goes to the VDR) and EXT1. Oh, and there is a "digital audio out" hole that is by itself.

Well as far as the antenna connections are concerned you have to use the loop / out procedure, with the TV being last in the chain. Antenna to DVR's antenna "input" DVR's RF output (or ae out) to the VCR's antenna input. VCR's RF output (or ae out) to the TV's antenna input. As far as the AV cables are concerned, you really have to state the exact model numbers for both the TV and the DVR, as the facilities offered between manufacturers can vary and so I would have to know the sockets offered on each item.
