Need advice on auto scanning cable channels.

I recently downgraded my expensive digital cable service to just the basic.(channels 2-70)I was told I didn't need a box and should return the digital box. However, I'm unable to get channels 54-70. I had to manually program 34-53 but could get no further. I was hoping to start from scratch and have the t.v. auto-scan all channels available but cannot find how to do that.
