JVC 700X Mini Dv No picture

Camera seems to think that the lens cap is on, there is no image (and no the lens cap is not on)

The message "Lens Cap" appears when the camera is turned on, there is no image to see and it will not record, but the playback facility of old tapes still works fine. The model is JVC Mini DV 700X

  This is caused through a manufacturing defect and which a "free"
  repair is on offer from JVC, this being conditional to you having the
  original packaging or the warranty which was contained therein.
  
  Free repair offer is valid up until the end of December 2008.
  
  As you have restricted your e-mail address the full info on this along
  with direct contact links cannot be provided, but contact the customer
  services appropriate to your area giving the actual model number, as the
  700x is not the model.
