JVC TV black square in middle of picture

I have a JVC TV Model AV27D800. When I switch to any channel I get a big black rectangle in the middle of the picture a split second later and I can't get rid of it. The manual has long since been lost and the JVC website doesn't have one that's downloadable. I'm assuming this is some sort of lockout problem, but all my attempts to correct this have failed. Help!

If you have a "closed caption" (marked "CC") button on your TV's remote control press it until the black square disappears, pressing this button can sometimes show an "auto-on / off" selection. However if you don't have that button on your remote control try this / Bring up the menu and highlight "closed caption", to access this menu press the "volume +" button. When you enter this menu it will say "mode text" Press the "volume +" button until it says "mode off", then press the "channel -" (minus) button and highlight "finish". Finally press the "volume +" button to save your settings.
