Sound quality on Nutone 4006

Have a 4006 master unit with speakers throughout entire house and patio. Was working well until we plugged an iPod into the external audio source jack. Since then the sound over all the speakers is very distorted. Any advice? Seems like plugging the iPod in caused something to go bad. But what component?
