DSC-V3 dial not working

I have a DSC-V3 and it is stuck in playback mode. I turn the dial and nothing happens....the LCD just says no file folder because I have no pictures on my card. I've tried resetting, but I still can't change the mode. The dial seems a bit harder to turn. Is there a way to remove the dial?
