GR-DX307 .DAT files

I have a GR-DX307 Camcorder. I cannot seem to get my footage onto my PC. It says they are .DAT files and cannot be read? It can be watched through the TV no problem but with the PC it finds it but files are always .DAT files and i can't find anything in the menu to change the format. Please help !!??
