E-03 is an indication that the cassette take up spindle is not turning correctly, this can be due to the actual cassette itself sticking or it having been too tightly wound, so try another tape. However if that does not cure the problem then it indicates that the spindle drive system is faulty, possibly due to contamination from using non-JVC branded tapes, as it should be noted that only JVC - Panasonic or Fuji tapes are recommended for use in JVC camcorders, as using brands such as Maxell or TDK are known to be the root cause of drive problems in JVC's over critical tape drive mechanisms.
