Format Error and Empty Disk

I purchased a Sony MP4 Player with a memory span of 2Gb. When I tried to save mp3 to my player, the memory had almost got full. Then I tried to play the mp3, the message "format error" and "empty disk" began to flash in my mp4 player screen. I reformatted my player using my computer and changed its file system into FAT32 but still, the same thing happens when my memory almost got full.What shall I do to prevent this message from showing? Does this mean that my player is defective? Please help me solve this problem. Thanks!
