mp4 player not prepring to play and not smooth playing my mp4 player pleas resolve my problem

i try to download some video clips on to the SONY MP4 player and saved the clips as .AMV files. But, when I try to view the clips there is an error showing "format error". Any idea what that means and how can I resolve. The original video clip was viewed on Windows media player from where I saved the file as .AMV file.
