Help with playing DVD's

I am helping my dad with his dvd/vhs player. He said it hasn’t worked right from the start. It will play a very few DVD’s like 2 or 3. I had looked at it & when you put a DVD in it will not spin & then I get error please remove disc. The only one that I got to run was a DVD that was made on a computer. I went to the Emerson site not much help there. I have also gone through the troubleshooting section. Any help would be great. Thank you Mike.
