Error message: CD DISC NG when attempting to record.

I own a JVC-XL-R5000. I have been attempting to follow the instructions in the manual for Recording onto CD-R and CD-RW using "manual recording" (Page 18). The 1st instruction is to Insert a recordable CD-R or CD-RW. The 2d instruction is to Press REC to put the CDR in record pause mode. At that time I get the following error message: CD DISC NG. I have tried several new audio writeable discs. I am unable to create a music CD. Any help provided would be appreciated.
