Sony STR-AV460 Receiver "Protector" light keeps coming on

Over the past year, the "Protector" light on my Sony STR-AV460 Receiver has come on occasionally. This causes the receiver to freeze, and cycling power has been the only way to restore functionality/sound. It appears to be some kind of circuit breaker feature, but I am not sure since I purchased the receiver used and don't have an owner's manual. In the last few days, the "Protector" light comes on immediately EVERY time the receiver is turned on. Is there hope, or do I just need to buy a new receiver? Any thoughts or insights appreciated.
