questions on editing audio for video?

hey wahts up AV community, I am an audio engineer and trying to learn more about video - i want to simply just edit audio for people on their video so i was wondering what is a good program to capture footage, or change a digital files properties so that i can edit it for people? like a program that can read any video file and change it into any file i like, can also capture analog footage.... can quicktime pro do so and what is a good monitor?....am looking for 24 inch ones, 3 of them to be exactm looking for price with value.....
