If that's the ONLY thing on the screen, it points to a broken connection to the horizontal deflection yoke. The horizontal sweep is still there, because with no horizontal sweep, you would have no high voltage and a blank screen. Look for broken solder connections at the yoke connector; if they look good, pull the yoke connector and check continuity, particularly on the horizontal yoke. Solder connection problems are common in many TVs and are relatively easy to fix (and cheap). If the yoke is bad, replacement may be relatively expensive (depending on cost of the yoke).

    Thank you so much for your help!! It is indeed the only thing on the screen when I turn the TV on. And it stays, no matter if I turn on cable or DVD or XBox. May I bother you with a one more question (actually, two :) Where exactly do I find the yoke connector? And what is the solder?
