My 12 year old was having the same problem, Error Code 162, after 30-40 seconds of trying to read disc. Machine "locked up", hit the "shut off" button and took another 30-40 seconds to reset....usually with a click sound.
I fixed it but not sure this method will work for everyone.
First, I used another user's suggestion and pulled out all of the trays using a pair of tweezers. Found 2 CDs in their trays and removed both.
Kept hearing a "shifting" or slight "clunking" sound when pulling out and/or pushing in the trays. At that point, pushing in tray #1 (bottom tray) became very very difficult. I didn't want to force it so I literally turned the machine upside down, hoping whatever was shifting inside the unit would fall back into place.
Well....after several mintues of this, I pulled out tray # 5 only to discover ANOTHER disc that had not made it presence known before. Where was it during all if this?? Your guess is as good as mine. My daughter's reply: "Oh, that's where that other cd went to." Teenagers.
I got all the trays to slide in/out very smoothly and tried another disc. No luck. Then I put a cd in tray #2, but pushed the button for tray #1, hoping that if it failed at reading #1, it would try #2. It did and it worked. I then tested playing discs and opening various trays at the same time just to make sure. Everything is working now. I'm going out today and purchase a lense cleaner, just in case.
One final note: The "delay" from when I pressed the "stand by" button has also disappeared and now immediately goes into Stand By when the button is pushed
Good luck.
