Sony KP-53XBR45 Screen looks stretched

The screen on my tv is stretched to far in all directions, so it seems. Peoples heads are being cut off the top. When I watch news, the ticker at the bottom is missing. The sides are also pulled to far. Any ideas how to fix this? A friend said to change the aspect ratio to 16:9. But I have no clue what that is or how to fix it. And he wasn't sure how to fix it on this tv. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!
