JVC-DX307EK Camcorder to Laptop problem

I have a JVC-DX307EK and am trying to load onto laptop via USB. This is not working. When i go into the camcorder the files are DAT files and not mpeg or something that i can play. Please help as i have taken a lot of footage of a holiday that i would like to save to disk and its making me tear my hair out Thank you
