Need the code to input into the remote for my cable box remote to activate the television.

I am in need of the code that will allow the remote for my cable box to activate the television. I have tried every code that is printed in the remote's manual to no avail. As of now, the cable remote will turn the box and tv off and on but will not allow us to activate any volume controls. We no longer have the remote to the tv either so we are having to manually change the volume every time you change the channel, since no channels are consistent with loudness. This also eliminates the ability to mute, which is handy.
