E-03 is always an indication of a fault in the cassette take up spindle, and if not caused by the actual cassette itself (common!) sticking and slowing up the take up, then its possibly contamination of some sort having affected the spindle drive system. It should be said that using tapes "other than" JVC - Panasonic or Fuji brands can be responsible for these type of problems, TDK and Maxell brands being the worst offenders with Sony slightly behind. (albeit that these brands are OK in non - JVC equipment)
