speaker system problems

i have a jvc av 28r 370ke television . It has two small speakers and a sub woofer as standard however these items have never worked . Do i need to do something to install ?I have had the tv from new but it is only now that i have moved to a bigger room that the problem has become obvious ( set now out of warranty )
