Flashing Read Light KP-53HS10 - any help is appreciated

I bought my KP-53HS10 new in 2000 and have maintained it perfectly. Last night my wife said there was a problem. The timer light flashes continuously and I am trying to figure out which part to replace. When I unplug it and plug it in a makes a sound for approx 2 seconds that sound like some type of transformer charging but I cannot be sure. Has anyone had an luck fixing this issue? It seems to be a common problem with this TV. Thank you
