Quick waver after turing on and then picture gone.

Good morning everyone. My eight year old Sony KV32S40 (great picture) went on, had a slight waver of the picture from the right vertical and then the picture died. Now when turned on there is no "thunk" (what is that anyway?) and the red blinking light continuously blinks. There isn't any sound either. Would love for this to survive until after the holidays (and hopefully easier flat panel prices. A friend has some knowledge of T.V. repair and asked if I could get some ideas on it's repair for him. Thanks in advance.
