Old Battery Dead. New Batteries will not charge. Camera operates off charger but batteries are not charging.

The old battery will not hold a charge. We purchased new batteries and found that they will not charge. The Camera operates off of the charger but batteries will not charge. Followed troubleshooting steps in Owner's Manual and still not luck (yes I tried to recharge with the camera powered off). The Camera operating with the charging unit attached tells me that the charger unit is operating as required. I had let the camera sit for a brief time, maybe a month, and the battery was dead. Normally this has never been an issue. We recently moved to Florida and I was thinking that perhaps it was the weather? Not beyond making repairs on small gas engines, cars, or even making upgrades to my home or computer. Digital cameras on the other hand are all new to me. What can I do?
