If the JVC brand remote control is being used for the JVC TV it was supplied with then it cant lose the code, if however the control was for something else but it is of a programmable type, then the battery has most likely been left out of the control for too long which will allow the code to be lost, and so this code (whatever that might be!) will require to be punched in again.
There is always a possibility that the IR sender on the remote has failed, this can be tested by pointing it at a digital camera / camcorder, and whilst observing the LCD on whatever, press any button and it should appear as a white light on the front of the control, if you dont see anything the infra red sender on the remote is faulty.
