I need to know if its original, and how it works

i bought an mp4 player of sony i want 2 know if its original. It has a problem although it is a 2GB player nothing can be copied on to it. The shopkeeper said thatt i'll need to format it. And when i tried to format windows replies an unsuccesfull formating, and that this disk may not e able to be formated. Can any one help.
