JVC digital camcorder. Not recording.

Hi, I have a JVC digital camcorder VU-A3O8KIT. I can watch recorded tape on it but it wont let me record anything. The LCD sceen is black with yellow sign of a person then 2 arrows then mountains at the bottom of the screen. It also says the lens cap is still on. Please can you help, what am I doing wrong.
