some problem with sony mp4 player

Hello, i have been using my sony mp4 player for an year now, 2 days back when i connected it to my laptop, my laptop is not sensing it, and also when i tried to listen to the songs, the songs are itself skipping, this was not a problem before can anybody please help me.
