Disc error message

I just purchased a Sylvania DVD Recorder SRDV 495 and it will only play the DVD's that came withit. They were MAxell DVD-R 4X. I have bought three different kinds of DVD Disc and they will not work. The error says eject disc as this may not have playback feature..I would appreciate any help, I am getting very frustrated. Linda
