Error E1 explaination

I own a Cannon Sure Shot Zoom-S 35M camera that is probably over 20 years old. It was working fine until recently when I received an E1 error while taking pictures on vacation. The camera will not turn off or on and the film is stuck in the middle of the roll. I replaced the battery but that did not resolve the problem. I do not know where my manual is and wanted to know if you can give me some information about this error. Thank you and best regards, Debbi P.S.
