Disc Errors and recent repairs

Owned this camera for 5 years 3 months. The first few years, everything was fine. Then the grinding noise and disc errors galore started. Just repaired two months ago via sony for over $200. The grinding noise stopped. I have had trouble with approx every other disc since then- trouble with "finalization". How do I extract photos from an unfinalized or otherwise botched disc? Although the CD camera was the best on the market in 2002, constant moving part problems is making the chip cameras a more attractive replacement possibilitiy.
