Device completely dead (except for the red power led) after not using it for an year.

Device completely dead, except for the red power LED, after not using it for a year. I also can hear a snap (similar to that of a shutter of an analog still camera) inside the optical block when I connect the power cord to the unit. The power LED lights solid red. I took the unit to the repair service and they told they have to change the main board, but the cost is similar to a new camera (repair services in Brazil are renown for their rip-offs). The problem sounds like only firmware loss or corruption. I'd like to know whether this is a simpler problem or not.
