Documentary

I am trying to put a documentary together and curious on the best way to protect my idea. Everything is telling me that I need the documentary first in order to protect it. I want to protect my idea first before spreading the word in fear of my idea getting ripped off. Is there any way around this? And what is the best way to put together a documentary?
