cannot record - lens cap sign stays on

When trying to record on my JVC GR-D53AA movie camera the lens cap sign comes on with a black screen and grey bar. Also a blue 'hand' signal is on. Any ideas?

Hi, I seem to be having the same problem as you,could you possibly tell me how to resolve. Everything is working but when I try to record I get a black screen on the LCD and the view finder. Janice
