cannot get picture to record

when powered up, the "lens cap" error code stays on even though the lenscap is off. Nothing shows through viewfinder or lcd screen. records sound and will replay sound and picture, but cannot get to record picture, or even show picture. serial is 118U6261. just recently installed new battery also. thank you
