How to fix error code C31 23

The machine is absolutely perfect, everything works as it should, till you put a cassette in! After putting in the cassette and pressing play, rewind etc. up comes the error code, then on opening the cassette compartment the mechanism will not pop up and eject the tape. You have to keep on switching the the recorder on and of and eventually it ejects. Repeat the performance without the cassette in and it works perfectly! Sony dealers attitude: "Ther'e so cheap now, throw it away and buy a new one!!!" Short of taking a 4lb sledgehammer to it, do you have any Ideas?
