Fault with DVD player

My DVD player works for a few minutes then scrambles and locks the player. Have to disconnect power to restart. CD and radio both work fine. Is this a hardare or software problem and is it fixable? The surround sound works fine whilst DVD player works! Any helpful advice gratefully received before I bin it!!!
