DVD player display states there is no disc loaded when there is.

The DVD/VCR combo is 1 1/2 years old. After inserting a disc the display states that the DVD player is reading the disc, this takes several minutes then the display says that there is no disc loaded. Have tried a lens cleaner, which it reads fine and also have tried to unplug it to reset it. After playing with it for a while you might get lucky and it might start to play a movie after you have shot a good portion of the night trying to get it running. Any help would be apprecaited. Thank you.
