How can I work this thing (mp4)

My son got a mp4 from Hong Kong, I try to run setup.exe and it tell me that the only operating systems I can use with it is Windows 98 and Windows Me, which tells me our Sony MP4 is probably about 2-3yrs old and not new like they said. I am currently running Windows XP is there anyone out there that may no how on earth I can install this software on my system. Right now my son can't even use the mp4 because everytime he tries to play music it says "disc error", we just got this it hasn't even been used for more than 15mins. I desperately looking to speak with someone who know's more about these......thanks!
