JVC GR-D244US error icon - "bowtie"

Whenever I turn unit on I get a "bowtie" icon in the upper left corner of lcd screen. No explanation in users manual what "bowtie" is for. Does anyone know? Removing battery, reinserting battery, and turning unit back on does not remedy situation! Ever since getting a static bolt from camcorder while dubbing I have been unable to use anything other than to record (no playback, rewind, fast forward, etc). After static bolt is when the bowtie starting appearing and loss of full functions. THANKS!
