Fix for AV 36980 that powers up after being unplugged

I have a av-36980 that was given to me by a friend.It was manufactured in 1998. It powers off but when I unplugg it and wait for 1-2 minutes , it will power up again. This was happening once a night but now occurs every 10 minutes. I have read other messages about the fix with the 1000uf 50 v capacitor but i was wondering if my problem would be the same and could be fixed the same way. I have a new capacitor bought but I would like to know if this would solve my problem. I have never taken the back off a tv let alone solder a part. Should i be concerned about a possible fire hazard if this part is not properly installed.
