blank lcd screed on jvc gr-d20ek

I have a gr-d20ek model that has suddenly stop functioning correctly. After switching onto record mode and opening the lcd screen "lens cap" flashes three times and the screen stays black with a couple of icons remaining in the corner of the screen. It seems almost as if the lense cap is still covering the lense although obviously it has been removed! I have trawled through the menus but have found nothing that can point me in the right direction. If anyone has experienced similar problems and overcome them i would be very appreciative of assistance on this one!
