VCR stuck in AUTO mode. If it's so automatic, why doesn't it fix itself?

Hi Stacy, I have a JVC HR-S4500 VCR that up until now I am very happy with. Whenever the power goes out, it goes into AUTO mode. When I turn the Power on, it powers up for about two seconds and shuts off. I can't play tapes or access the menu either. Every other forum I look at that has this problem listed said to press ON on the remote for seven seconds, which doesn't fix the problem. The owner's manual says to turn the auto-clock off, which of course I can't do because I can't keep the VCR on long enough to access the menu. It's very frustrating and I know there's a secret button combination on the VCR or remote that will make this problem disappear. Thanks. Greg
