Camcorder wont record!! Image blank on screen and through view finder but will still play recorded tapes.

Please help, as I have a baby boy who we love to videotape as he grows up. Model number GR-D23EK. I recorded film successfully last week and all I have done with it since is charge the battery. this morning I wanted to record my son crawling and no image came up on the screen or through the view finder - yes the lens cap was off! LOL. If i try to play pre-recorded tapes it will play, rewind, fast forward etc, but if i try to record nothing happens. Have tried just about every option on the menu to see if it makes a difference but to no avail. If someone could shed some light on this for me I would be very grateful.
