If the unit won't read CDs and DVDs, its most likely the drive belt.

There is a little black drive belt about the size of an elastic band buried deep inside the laser. If you replace it or even just clean it and give it very light coat of a rubber restorer like Sil Glyde, you will be back in business. You may have to manually spin the cd/dvd to get it started the first time, but after the belt is seated, it works perfectly.
