tape/eject error play/rewind/fastforward, and record functions not working.

Everything lights up and all the buttons show their function on screen. The tape compartment ejects and goes in properly. However the view finder shows a tape with a slash through it and a flashing eject button symbol. The tapes will not play record rewind or fast forward. though when they are initially put in I can hear the motor running. Any idea what is causing this error?
