My computer (XP professional) detects but does not recognise my digital camcorder when I connect it with a USB cable.

I have used the CD provided to install the drivers and received error "not windows tested" etc, continued install as per instructions on JVC.com FAQ but XP advised "problem installing new hardware...etc", camera still not recognised. Camera is about three years old, old PC (XP also) did not seem compatible either. Have been taping straight onto VHS but would like to make DVDs. Are you able to help? Searching the net I found a number of people with the same problem (inc. in this forum) but I have been unable to find an answer.
