Picture comes on and goes off continuoulsy.

The TV was made in April of 2000. The sound works fine, but the picture stays on for about 1 second and goes off for about a second continuously. Reading all the emails on the site does not leave much hope for an easy solution. By the way, thank you in advance to all the folks that are kind enough to help others with helpless technichal issues.
