Digital 8 handycam and persistant C:31:40 message

Hello to all, I have a Digital 8 handycam that is only 3 years old, and has not really been used for the last 12 months. I took it out this christmas because of a family vacation to Disney (thought I would capture my kids reaction to seeing Magic Kingdom for the first time). Lo and behold the camera did not work (C:31:40). Tried everything the book told me, and even using a hairdryer. Nothing. Whacked it a few times as mentioned on this posting site. All is fine. Does anyone know what is really going on?
